Description
The Gandoca lagoon is part of the wetlands contained in the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge with an extension of 266 hectars, and was declared as an internationally important site by RAMSAR . It stands out for its extremely high purity and because of that is a principal breeding site for the tarpon and the manatee, a highly endangered species. The lagoon also contains the only natural mangrove oyster bank on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica. Its high diversity in flora and fauna is due to its protected continuity of mangroves and rainforest. This is one of our coast’s treasure off the beaten path and can only be accessed in company with a guide and a silent boat.
